Haechang Brewery
A brewery in Haenam that began in 1927 as a rice warehouse in Haechang-ri and, now on its fourth owner, is known for organic glutinous rice makgeolli.

The brewery's story
Haechang Brewery began as a rice warehouse built in 1927 by a Japanese rice merchant. After passing through Jang Nam-mun and Hwang Ui-gwon, it came in 2008 to the couple Oh Byeong-in and Park Ria, who became its fourth owners. The brewery receives organic glutinous rice from Haenam through contract farming and makes its makgeolli without sweeteners; the 9% and 12% are brewed by the samyangju (triple-brewed) method and the 18% by the sayangju (four-stage brew) method. The old residence and garden still stand, and in 2014 the brewery was designated a “Visiting Brewery” (찾아가는 양조장) by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
